Hello,
You might try the batch files from Dave Methvin
http://content.techweb.com/winmag//fixes/defrag.htm
http://content.techweb.com/winmag//fixes/scandisk.htm
I've been using them for years on my W98SE system with no problems. You
must be sure that your screen saver is turned off, then simply click on the
batch file, restart the computer, and scan disk or defrag loads before
anything else. This was the only method I could find that consistently
worked for my system.

Hi Bob,
I have frequently run Scandisk from the DOS prompt, with out problems on
my Windows 98 computers.
I go to Start> Shutdown> Restart in DOS
At the C:\ type in SCANDISK then click on enter.
But I have never received that message when running in safe mode.

following message.
Warning Message:
If you run an MS-DOS program in safe mode, you risk currupting the video
display or experiencing other anomalies. Do yo want to run the program
anyway? Yes or No
Naturally I picked No.
I am running a Windows 98 system. Should this message be heeded?
