I use the dot to mark (+) polarity on capacitors as well when space is
critical.

Let's settle a question for me.  In almost every place I've worked, we have
marked the cathode end of a diode to indicate its polarity.  Usually with a
dot.
What is the majority thinking on this.  Do we mark the anode or cathode end?
