"Online and on Guard"
Dallas Morning News (05/05/02) P. 1R; Hughes, Kristine

The University of Texas at Dallas is establishing the
Digital Forensics and Security Institute in Dallas' Telecom
Corridor to fight cybercrime. The institute will provide
training for law enforcement agents and hopes to offer
bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees in the future.
Classes at the center will focus on such areas as digital
forensics, encryption, wireless networks, hardware networks,
and computer and digital networks. UTD is working in
conjunction with the Greater Dallas Crime Commission and the
National White Collar Crime Center. The university will
provide the curriculum, lab, and instructors, who will be
joined by adjunct professors from the corporate arena, says
Millie DeAnda of the Greater Dallas Crime Commission.. Law
enforcement agencies need training in digital forensics due
to the exponential rise in cybercrimes, she adds. Carnegie
Mellon University and a few other institutions offer similar
programs, DeAnda notes. UTD's institute will require some $2
million in donations, federal funds, and grants during its
first three years, according to DeAnda, whose organization
is helping raise the amount. www.dallasnews.com
