Well it was interesting...you got me thinking and I dredged up a page
about people who are building apps for social networking sites.
Which then led me to this page:

The long and the short of it is, that Google has created something
called OpenSocial and gotten commitments from various social networks
(myspace, orkut, linked-in,etc.)
Open Social basically is "gives developers of social applications a
single set of APIs to learn for their applications to run on any
OpenSocial-enabled website"
So instead of having dozens of unique API's to have to figure out and
code from for each application, to build the same widget for each
different social networking site, there will just be one set.
Interesting thought and idea by Google, I'm actually impressed by
their intent for streamlining and efficiency.
