.wav is not necessarily outdated, just no longer as popular.
in general audio compression in .wav files is less efficient than in mp3, ie
same content at the same sound quality will take up more space using wav
files versus mp3.
because of that, wav files are more often used for shorter audio clips,
whereas mp3 are more often used for 'complete' works.
