I think your mixing up metatags with alt tags. Alt tags are must haves...
A metatag is a useless tag that goes at the start of a html doc which
is suppose to give an ovierview of the doc and/or keywords. The idea was
that a search engine would look at the meta tag and correctly index your
website. The problem started when people starting abusing this to raise
their search ratings. Also google doesn't look at metatags but the actual
live text within the document.
But here is a good article:

The Top 5 SEO Myths
Part 1: It's all about the Meta Tags.
Myth #1 - Meta Tags are the key to high rankings.
Five years ago, this might have been the case. Meta Tags were originally
designed to provide
webmasters with a way to help search engines know what their site was about. It
wasn't too long
before some webmasters tried to abuse this process by stuffing keywords into
their tags in an
attempt to rank higher. Because of this abuse, engines placed less and less
emphasis on the
content of Meta Tags. Today, nearly all of the major engines ignore them
completely.
This isn't to say that it's not worth the extra few minutes it takes to add
them to your site;
after all, Inktomi and some of the smaller engines still give some weight to
their contents. Meta
Tags should be viewed as a very small part of SEO. It's best to focus your time
and efforts on the
actual content and code of your site.
