This seems a broad generalization. All large lists that I have been or am
on, especially those that are moderated, explicitly encourage users to
respond to the original poster of a thread rather than the group, and then
have the poster submit a summary to the list. Different lists will of
course have different forms of interaction, depending on the list culture
and content type, but I would be interested in seeing some research that
shows that private responses are unusual in a discussion group context.
