Hi everyone; this is my first post to this list. I'm just back from
vacation, am finishing off a freelance job, and am readying myself to
launch a hunt for a real, f/t job -- possibly in project management.
I attended NYU's ITP before learning about Columbia's CTA program. I
mention this because while the two programs are vastly different in terms
of coursework and social life, NYU was fiendishly expensive and CTA isn't
and all I really needed was a mid-life career change. I don't have any
regrets, but I don't have any spare cash lying around anymore, either!
Anyway, to come to the point: a former co-worker took CTA's DB course
while working f/t as a project manager. Night class for two years. She
finished maybe a year ago. Sounded like a great vocational-style program
so out of curiosity I attended an open house event several months ago.
(FYI there's another open house coming up in a few weeks:
http://www.ce.columbia.edu/cta/.) I was favorably impressed by the
program's curric, sched, standards & focus as articulated by the dept.'s
chairman -- and price. Was also favorably impressed by the apparent
smarts and teaching ability of the person who heads up their DB program.
I didn't check out their other courses.
The only real advice I garnered from my former coworker was that if you
have web experience you shouldn't bother taking the program's general
overview course if, after testing you, the staff recommends but does not
require that you take it. Go through the book instead. The text for that
course was and perhaps still is MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS: NEW
APPROACHES TO ORGANIZATION & TECHNOLOGY by Laudon and Laudon (see
http://www.prenhall.com/laudon). It looks like a really good,
easy-to-read, comprehensive overview.
Regards all and thank you Morry for organizing this list! Sorry I missed
the event the other night. I look forward to the next chance.
