[webproducers] Video Compression -- Software and More...

Hello,
One of my clients gave me some AVI files to post on their website. However,
these files are upwards of 50 megabytes. Clearly, there is no way I can post
them online.
I don¹t currently own any software to compress or prepare video files for
the web. In fact I have limited knowledge of the process.
The client transferred the video themselves from VHS to CD to save money.
Can anyone recommend (a) resources to learn about the process of posting
video footage online (b) recommend software to compress or prepare AVI or
any digital video files for the web.
Any insight is greatly, greatly appreciated.
