Hi Morry,
There is a nearly endless combination of hosting services, shopping carts,
sever certificates, payment processing solutions, and other site
requirements. The trick is to find the least expensive, but technically
compatible and reliable combination of services that you are capable of
installing and managing in a reasonable amount of time. You many find a
great cart, but then realize the cart does not integrate with your payment
gateway, or you may like a particular hosting service, but that service does
not offer your preferred cart or other required services. You can find
several free carts, but they may be limited in their usefulness or require
more skills to install. The time consuming hunt goes on and on.
Do you have a particular use in mind?
For smaller operations, I have found that you are better off with something
like a Miva Merchant account with a service like http://www.dellhost.com/ or
http://www.hostway.com/ than trying to squeeze every last penny out of a mix
of components form a variety of vendors. It also makes the service and time
pieces of the equation a lot easier. http://www.valueweb.com/ does a great
job and the package is complete, but it costs a bit more.
Some other options:
Storefront.net (Several options) -
http://www.storefront.net/products/now/default.asp
Mal's Ecommerce (Free) - http://www.mals-e.com
AIT (Free cart to hosting cust.) http://mcart.com/freemcart.htm
I am interested in other responses because I am still looking for low cost
solutions for my students.
Onward...
Rapid
