Now there's a Freudian slip! :-)
I find Basecamp useful as a kind of roll-up dashboard, but I
supplement it with to-the-purpose Web-based tools.
For executing tasks at the lowest outline level of the MS Project
file, we use Request Tracker, a traditional call center app with
both a Web and email interface and fine-grained permissions. For
collaborative document management I prefer wikis. Best of breed,
it seems to me, is TWiki, a open-source "structured wiki" with
hundreds of community-contributed extensions. It's an entire
replacement for Basecamp if one has the time to harness its
power.
However, it's hard to beat some of Basecamp's specialized
features, e.g., access permissions purpose-built for agencies,
clients, and vendors. Plus, I don't think anything's ever going
to be as slick as Basecamp when it comes to interaction design.
There's only one 37Signals, and they're at the top of their game.
