Hi, there,

Sounds like you're doing strategic services instead of delivering a final
product. In my experience, especially if it's your first time out on such an
endeavor, add 50% (or more) to what you think it's going to cost because you're
going to spend some time ramping up, and then there are always unexpected
things along the way. And make sure your scope is *tight*. List how many
meetings you'll have, who will be there, how long they will last, and each task
that you expect to go through to complete the engagement. You may not have to
reveal all of those in the proposal, but at least do it for your internal
estimating so you know what you're getting yourself into, and to set the
client's expectations. If things start running over, you'll have an easier time
getting a change order approved for increases because you can say, "We expected
X many meetings, but it's clear we need two more to make sure we accomplish Y."

I'm sometimes completely amazed at how much time goes into strategy work; those
engagements tend to take on a life of their own as you get ideas and build on
them. We keep all the timesheets for historicals so we can use them for future
estimates and there's always something I didn't anticipate. Usually, it's a
good thing that ended up benefiting the account in the end, but we had to eat
some of the costs to preserve good will with the client.

Good luck! I'd love to hear how it goes.

Subject: [webproducers] Proposal pricing question - web publicity

  Hi All,

I was wondering if I could get some guidance on how to price a
proposal for a client. I'm used to building things and in this case
they don't need anything built but need research and then publicity
related correspondence, placement of reviews, chats, etc. Any ball
park guidance on how to price this. Has anyone done work on a book
  campaign?

  Thanks,
  Josh
