Thanks for all the responses - but I think I wasn't clear with my question.
So here's my "do's and don'ts for functionality", rather than just "project
set-up/ management/ process do's and don'ts"....
DO's - Intranet Functions that Users Like (in no particular order)
1. Canteen Menus, if your site does not have a canteen, then this may be a
list of local sandwich/ delivery store phone numbers.
2. Maps and guides to other people, other places that the company operates.
E.g. our office in Birmingham is at this address, here is a map, and here i=
s
the phone number, and here is a list of employees and job titles.
3. Business templates/ word/ power point etc =AD allows distributed users to
keep updated easily. How to Guides =AD can be used to ensure that people use
document templates correctly.
4. An electronic version of the company's employee handbook, if one exists,
and new employee orientation packs.
5. Message Boards =AD allowing users to post information, and receive
information.
6. Any repetitive task that employees have to complete often. E.g.
Timesheets.
7. Encouragement to contribute =AD the more authors you have, the more likely
it is that they will produce content that attracts your users back to the
intranet.
8. Document Versioning =AD keeping one master/ latest version ensures that
everybody works on the latest document.
9. Project information =AD this is what we sold to person x who has this
profile, this is the logic behind it, and this is how much we charged.
10. News Items =AD replacing the traditional paper news sheet.
11. Text search functions, so that you can search the intranet for specific
functions.
12. Diaries, scheduling
13. Provide tools that allow users to customise/ personalise the content
they recieve
Don'ts:
1 - Don't provide any function that allows users to design their own pages
<shudder>
2. Making your intranets look like your web site =AD there should be a clear
design difference.
2. letting information run out of date =AD users must find new relevant
content or they won=B9t use it
4. Providing functionality that no-one wants =AD check carefully before
implementing
5. Replicating functionality that is better provided elsewhere
6. Using unnecessary technology, e.g. java/ javascript/ dhtmlwhen not
needed.
7. Making pages unaccesible to remote pages, e.g. file size too heavy
Any others appreciated.
cheers
chris
