I use T-Mobile and love it. It's GSM and pricing appears high (to me, at least) 
but has proven very cost effective. For example I get unlimited internet access 
for my Treo 600 phone (albeit 56kb which is fine for email) for $19.95 per 
month.
That said, if you're NYC based, Verizon might be fine. I did the research end 
of last year and T-Mobile worked out best for me.
