This is a huge issue in the profession but not unique to WP's. There was a
big discussion about this recently on the sig-ia list for Information
Architects.
WPO came out of the need to better support people who find themselves in the
role of leader or manager of a digital media project at some point or
another and there is a huge range within that.
Some WP's have another dominant role but sometimes lead their team or the
entire project team, some are concerned with everything from working on the
proposal and scope to being hands on in the production phase, and others are
working as managers and more on the business side of things. And within all
these distinctions there are people working freelance, small agencies, large
agencies, in-house departments large and small, and the list goes on and on.
The important thing for someone like you, John is to get an idea of what
part of it you might want to be a part of. You'll need to ask some questions
like:
Do I want to be doing hands on production?
Do I want to work in-house?
Do I want a small or large environment?
Do I want to work with the client?
Do I want to manage schedules and budgets?
Do I want to work on the proposal and the early stages of getting the sales?
These are all questions that will help narrow what you like and what you
might have experience in and can offer an employer. Then when you go and
interview or look at job descriptions you will know better if it's a match
before you send a resume.
I say focus on your skills, experience, and interest not titles. This is
also why I strongly urge people not to use "objectives" in their resume's as
they often are poorly written and limit your opportunities. Who cares if
they call you a producer, project manager, developer, webmaster, or chief
cook and bottle washer- if your skills and interrests match the job then you
might have a match!
Best,
Morry
