[webproducers] Re: form with unique numbering system

Shirley,

Two ideas:

1) The proper way to do this would be through some sort of database on the
backend that captures your webform data and assigns it a unique number. If you
familiar with connection DBs to websites this is easily done. Both MS-SQL
Server and MS-Access will do autonumbering for you on a primary-key.

2) My other idea is a work around and not something i would normally suggest
but given your experience level it might be appropriate. This will only work
if you don't need to store which numbers get assigned to which clients but only
need unique numbers to be generated. You can look on the web for some
javascript functionality designed for page or visitor counter and use that to
create the numbers. Note: This may not work all the time if your clients have
javascript turned off though.

Good luck,
Duke

Per Morry's recommendation, I'm requesting the listserv's advice. Thanks to
all of you for such a great group of people willing to help each other. I've
been a silent member for some time --so this is my first post -- Thanks in
advance !

I'm glad you are on the list and I'm glad you asked me this. This
is a perfect question for the list but I'll try to answer as best
as I can.

Because
of the importance of ensuring the numbers are accurate this has to
be thought out and planned for both usability (to try to avoid human
error---avoiding computer error is easier) and technical accuracy. Have
you thought of hiring a freelancer programmer? You should probably
consider someone with experience doing dynamic web stuff. I know some
people if you have the budget. Otherwise I would look into what other
people out there have done for similar type projects. You might want to
post your message to the whole WebProducers list it's really a good
questions and you get to pull from the experience of more than 200 people
from all over.
