Mar 25: OBITUARY - Grace Eileen Nunery
Note from Kim Drake - for those of you unfamiliar with Grace, she was
best remembered as founder of Indiana Deaf Family Camps. I met Grace
once when I volunteered for Deaf Camp – a beautiful, warm, lovely lady,
and a joy to “talk” to. She will be missed.
Obituary: Grace Eileen Nunery
The 1990 Indiana Jefferson Award winner for distinguished public
service, Grace Eileen Nunery, 89, went home to the Lord Tuesday, March
25, 2008 at her home in Indianapolis, IN. The Indiana Jefferson Award,
as well as the American Institute for Public Service Award, presented by
Senator Dan Coates, was given for twenty years of sustained volunteer
service to the Indiana deaf community. She received numerous other
awards for distinguished public volunteer service including the 1999
Mayor Goldsmith Volunteer Partnership Award, Sertoma Service to Mankind
Award, and the 1971 Goshen Outstanding Woman of the Year Award.
The first of three daughters, Grace was born December 11, 1918 in
Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated as valedictorian of her college class
at God’s Bible School in Cincinnati in 1939.
She was the beloved wife of Reverend C. Albert Nunery, and mother of
Ruth (and Mike) Allford, David (and Debbie) Nunery, William (and
Mathieu) Nunery, and Dorothy (and Timothy) Juergensen. She cherished
her family, and was blessed to have 18 grandchildren and 13 great
grandchildren (including Aidan Sophia Hunt who preceded her in death).
Grace was a devoted minister’s wife, and founder of multiple deaf
ministries including the deaf ministry at St. Luke’s United Methodist
Church. In 1973, Mrs. Nunery founded the Indiana Deaf Family Camp which
still continues. She later added a week long residential camp for deaf,
h-o-h, and coda children, offering a wonderful camping experience for
all, regardless of ability to pay. She captured the hearts and changed
the lives of many deaf people during her years of service. It was her
desire to show God’s grace and love always, and she will be remembered
by many as “our Amazing Grace.”
A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, March 29,
2008 at St. Luke’s UMC with pastor Kent Millard officiating. Calling
will be from 4-8 pm on Friday, March 28, 2008 at Leppert Mortuary, 740
E. 86th Street, as well as the hour preceding the funeral service at St.
Luke’s United Methodist Church on Saturday.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to
Indiana Deaf Camp Foundation, 100 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260.
If you are interested in sharing your thoughts and memories of Grace
Nunery, there is an online Guest Book to write that in. I’m sure the
family and friends would appreciate reading how Grace has touched your life.
