As the early egg date for Virginia is April 6th, this was likely a
"rehearsal." This behavior is described in a 1966 article by Lawrence
Kilham on Hairy Woodpecker behavior, which appears in the September 1966
issue of the Wilson Bulletin (page 254). Kilham dubs this midwinter
courtship behavior as "pantomime of copulation." Let's see what Jerry does
with that.

Subject: [va-richmond-general] Hairy Woodpeckers
We had a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers on the gum tree out back this morning.
One was drumming, was joined by its mate, they both moved up the tree
and mated! It seemed early for such activity to me - apparently not!
