[va-richmond-general] Re: Where have all the birds gone?

Hi All,

A couple days ago with the bit of snow, Robyn saw over 60 Am.
Goldfinches around our feeders. I had seen about 40 the day before, but
these numbers fluctuate madly for us in large part due to strafing by
multiple Sharp-shinned hawks.

We put out a lot of sparrow / ground food and have good cover through
the yard, so the congregation of "littles" seems to taunt the hawks.
Some moments or seemingly days, there is more hunting taking place and
of course, everything else has to scatter away until the coast is clear.

Maybe you have an uptick in predator activity causing a temporary
location adjustment? As Wendy said too though, the natural food supply
is always a consideration. Maybe we stole away with some of the
Richmond birds? ;-)

Cheers from Bridgewater, Shenandoah Valley,

Bill Benish (and Robyn P.)
