Nelda, it's wonderful to know that some people understand that yes, it
was all Indian property to begin with, especially the places where
there were known Indian communities when the English came (we are
trying to move away from the consistent use of the word "village" to
describe our Contact-era town sites). You are right that the
Arrahatteck were tributaries to the paramount chief Powhatan, but that
did not mean being under his control. The English greatly
misunderstood our socio-political systems of that era.
I am glad you are pleased with the planning for Tree Hill to date; it
does seem like the developers have good hearts and open minds. You give
me hope about the future of Curles Neck too. I hope you are attending
the planning session. Thanks so much for writing this and helping to
educate us all about these developments.

Actually, the Arrahatteck (there are 30 some spellings) Indians
were controlled by Powhatan as one of his group of tribes, and there
are a couple presumed village sites (out of 5) closer to Richmond---one
being on our property (I think of it as the Indians' property!) on
Arrahatteck trail.
The Curles Neck property is still being gravel mined in some areas.
Development there is probably way in the future and will be in the
nature of the Tree Hill development as a little town or village on the
river.
If you drive east on Route 5 from east Main Street, as soon as you
cross the railroad tracks past Rocketts Landing, you feel as if you're
in the country, and you will see the first of 2 blue and white Planning
Dept signs announcing a hearing on the development. (It's currently
scheduled for Nov 27th at 7pm at the Supervisors Board Room at the
Henrico County Complex on Parham Rd.) Tree Hill is an extremely well
planned development and a far superior alternative to the land being
developed piecemeal with a conglomeration. And yes, we will sorely
miss the beautiful views of this farm that I've enjoyed all my 70 years.

No, not the same site. Tree Hill Farm is in Varina. It's where the
developers are giving 7 acres to the Virginia tribes, because that is
where the town called Powhatan was, the town the paramount chief
Powhatan came from.
Curles Neck Farm is much further east, to the east of the 295
intersection with Route 5. That's being developed too. The area is
much larger, and some of the land has been used for gravel mining.
There were Indian towns there too, near Deep Bottom and further east,
but they were Arrohateck, not Powhatan. Curles Neck is a great place
for birding, but that may all change once the developers muck it up.

On channel 12 at 5pm, very little information about a public hearing
tonite at 7pm regarding the Tree Hill Farm Development which is the
name, I think, was given to Curls Neck Dairy. It was reported that the
hearing was about whether the public wanted this development. The
location of the public hearing was not mentioned! I guess you have to
call 12.
