Three stalwart (women) paddlers floated through Merchant's Millpond in
Gatesville, NC yesterday in spite of a less than promising weather forecast.
The cloud cover obscured our looks at what we estimate to be species numbers
in the 40's and the stiff breeze probably blew another 12 species out of
sight. We did get to see a Phoebe flitting amongst the cypress knees and
several Turkey vultures kettled overhead waiting for an opportunistic
capsize. Sapsuckers "mewed" in the tree tops and we heard the usual woodland
suspects. At one point I considered wrapping myself Spanish moss to test out
the insulation properties but opted for hot chocolate and tucking in my
kayak skirt.
Everyone stayed dry, the foliage was spectacular and there were no
mosquitoes. We reflected on our day at the Virginia Diner on the way home
and decided that a spring camping/canoe adventure is definitely a must. This
is a great place with a unique habitat.
