After the wonderful morning trip with Margaret to Cumberland Marsh, three
intrepid birders plotted and schemed further adventures in birding for the
day!

Team Avian-ADHD (ask me why), comprised of Janice Frye, Irene Ries, and
Tyler Turpin ventured on to Turkey Hill Road, and then to Glendale/Malvern
Hill National Battlefield Park.

Here's a combined list of what we saw:

  Common Tern
  Laughing Gull
  Ring-bill Gull
Bald Eagle (one juvenile; adult pair)
  Turkey and Black Vultures
  Eastern Meadowlark
Snow Goose (blue and white phases)
  Cooper's Hawk
  Canada Goose
  Great Egret (2)
  American Goldfinch
  Blue Jay
  European Starling
  American Robin
  White-throated Sparrow
  Brownheaded Cowbird
  Red-winged Blackbird
  Song Sparrow
  Common Grackle
  Northern Harrier
  Carolina Wren
Merlin (first suspected sighting 2 weeks ago; positive ID in good
lighting this trip by all 3 birders)
  Great Blue Heron
  Mallard Duck
  Eastern Towhee
  Chipping Sparrow
  Redbellied Woodpecker
  Downy Woodpecker
  Northern Flicker
  Eastern Bluebird
  Red-shouldered Hawk (adult pair)
  Red-tailed Hawk
  Red-headed Woodpecker (3 adults, 1 juvenile)
  Belted Kingfisher (pair)
  Tufted Titmouse
  Carolina Chickadee
  Dark-eyed Junco

We were joined by Ofc. Leslie Winston of the NPS while we were watching
the Red-headed Woodpeckers, and he whipped out his own pair of binoculars to
catch sight of the birds as well.

Wrapping up our lovely day, Janice and Irene swung by the Warfield's to
drop off some auction items, and while all were assembled out on the deck, a
Red-shouldered Hawk dropped by (and promptly flew off as soon as Al appeared
with photography gear), to be followed by a Redbellied Woodpecker.

A good time had by all!

  Happy birding.

  Irene in Southside
