Wow!
Another spectacular day of birds and birders at Dutch Gap in Chester for our second banding demonstration yesterday. The cloud cover kept the temperatures comfortable and the birds were hitting the nets consistently throughout the morning to provide a steady flow of interest to our over 30 visitors. So happy to see all the children who came out and am encouraged by the knowledge they already have about birds. We netted 34 birds with a fair number of recaps in that total. True to form for Dutch Gap-Carolina Wrens and Northern Cardinals were the main players. We did have some migrants stop-over which is always exciting.
As always, this whole program could not be done without the time and willingness of our volunteers. Thank you to Sara Saunders with Chesterfield Parks and Recreation for transporting all the folks to our station and a big thank you and hugs to all our MAPS volunteers who tirelessly turn out for the birds. Thanks to Cindy Van Den Boom for taking great photos.
Here's the list of netted birds:
Northern Cardinal
Carolina Wren
Ovenbird (2)
Grey Catbird (2)
Eastern Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Chickadee
Grey-Cheeked Thrush
Black and White Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
Eastern Phoebe
