If I have 4 or 5 days in late February, I would head to Florida,
specifically Sanibel Island. You would have to fly into Naples or Fort Myers
and rent a
car, but what a great place when you get there. It is my favorite spot on
the East Coast. The Ding Darling Refuge is a fantastic place, and you would
be close enough to go to the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.
Also, the area around Charleston SC is a six hour drive from Richmond and
has some good birding spots. The Middleton Place Inn just outside of
Charleston overlooks a river and a marsh and when I stayed there you got the
free use
of kayaks. The Francis Marion Forest is nearby, and is a neat place, too.
