I would say this story doesn't add up to a hawk. Though I can't say from
direct knowledge that this is not hawk predation, there are two big reasons
why it is very likely not. First, a natural predator is not going to the
trouble of killing something and then leaving it by your front steps. A
hawk would quickly carry off and eat its prey in entirety unless somehow
interfered with. Second, visually and aurally, a hawk isn't equipped to
hunt at night, even with a full moon. However, an animal that is killed
and left uneaten on your steps is entirely consistent with house cat
behavior; if not your own, then a neighbors. Cats are immensely destructive
to wildlife and they often leave their victims as you describe. I think you
would need to disprove the cat scenario before looking at a hawk. That there
is a hawk in your neighborhood and a dead rabbit is coincidental, not
causal.

This is a question from my sister-in-law in Harrisonburg.... Any ideas?
Thanks,
Lois
About a week ago, the kids were outside and thought they saw a hawk in our
trees. We looked in a bird book, and they thought it looked like a
red-tailed
hawk. (I didn't see it, so don't know for sure). Anyway, Fri night around
9:30 p.m. I heard a terrible squawking outside (sounded like a hawk--in my
limited knowledge). Couldn't see anything from the windows, and I didn't go
out to
look. The next morning when we went outside there was a dead rabbit by our
front steps...looked like hawk damage (top of neck & head). My question is,
will hawks hunt at night??? There was a full moon that was giving a lot of
light that night. I couldn't find my answer in the encyclopedia, so I'm
going
to a more knowledgeable source! Hope you can help my curiosity. I saw a hawk
soaring in our neighborhood on Saturday morning, but don't know enough to
identify from the ground.
