Funny you should mention that just now. Last night at dinnertime, we had 
a couple of inquisitive Goldfinches trying to figure out how to get to 
the tasty stuff in our hummingbird feeder. I've also seen House Finches 
try to force their way in. I guess they figure if Hummingbirds are 
finding something worthwhile there, then they ought to be able to get 
something out of it too. Haven't seen the behavior with the seed that 
you describe, though.
