[va-richmond-general] why clean out bird nest boxes

Cleaning out a nestbox once you know the birds have fledged frees up the box
for another user the same nesting season.
I cleaned out a nest box a pair of Carolina Chickadees used from late February
to sometime in April. After I cleaned it out a pair of House Wrens used it and
before I could clean it out the same pair came back and laid two more eggs in
their nest and the one young bird that hatched fledged on Tuesday. The other
nestbox had the pair of Carolina Wrens use the same box twice. I cleaned out
their box after the first time so they came back to the box for a second nest.
Counting the pair of Carolina Wrens that nested in a hanging basket plant on my
deck I had 6 bird nest on my property this year with at least 11 birds fledging.
Sincerely,
Tyler Turpin
