"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a wonderful trip.
That started from Dutch Gap Lagoon
Aboard many tiny ships.
The mates were a mighty birding team
The skippers brave and sure
Thirteen paddlers set sail that 'eve
For a three hour tour...a three hour tour."
A terrific paddle with 13 RAS birders last night throughout the channels and wetlands of the Dutch Gap lagoon. The weather was perfect, the mosquitoes absent and the birds sang from put-in to take-out. Most abundant sightings were Osprey, Prothonotary warbler, Tree Swallow and Great Blue Heron. We had several fly over flocks of Cedar Waxings and an interesting display of "parenting" at the Heron Rookery. Fish were jumping, Venus was sparkling and everyone kept the gunnels up.
Thanks to all who turned out. Special thanks to Dottie and Dee from Chesterfield Parks and Rec. who were our excellent leaders and also to Mark Battista for helping organize this trip.
