We have found the culprit. After over a year of waiting, we heard the
ratatatatat sound again. I raced out to the front door and discovered a
downy woodpecker pecking on the siding of our house just above a first floor
window. Some of the siding has already been pecked away, showing the
particleboard or whatever the siding is made out of underneath. So what do
we do about it? And why do they go for the house rather than the suet and
seed in the back yard?

Jim, in the past I have had a woodpecker like my gutters. They look for a
good sounding board to notify honey bunch and by golly the gutter does
wonders. It will ruin sleep if you are a late sleeper. Short of elimination,
I don't know of an answer. I use mine as an alarm clock, time to get up.

Have any of you had problems with woodpeckers pecking on your house? Several
mornings I hear ratatatatatatat over my second floor bedroom. I go to the
window. The noise stops. But I can't find where the woodpecker is pecking.
The nearest trees are about 15 feet away. If there are woodpeckers pecking
on the house, what do you do about it? There are plenty of trees in the yard
and we provide a bird feeder and suet, and downy and red-bellied woodpeckers
frequently visit the suet.
