Don't forget there is a walk scheduled for Henricus Saturday the 28th at 7 a.m.
Linda & I scouted it this morning, and there were plenty of birds to see. The
route will be from the visitor center east along the bank of the flyash pond,
and then we'll take a side trail that was very productive today. The bank of
the flyash dam has not been mowed, and there are thistle and "Butter & Eggs"
galore, which are attracting goldfinches, Indigo Buntings, several types of
sparrows, Common Yellowthroats, Red-winged Blackbirds, etc.
We heard more than we saw, especially on the wooded trail, but we did see
Yellow-throated and Prothonotary Warblers, Redstarts, three different vireos,
and several woodpeckers. There is also a mullberry tree with fruit about 40-50
feet off the main trail that also is attracting birds.
Even though summer has finally hit, the birds are still out in force. Bring
water, bug spray, and sunscreen. Based on our scouting today we should be
finished by around 10:30 to beat the heat. Maybe a little longer if the heat
holds off.
By the way, there are at least 4 types of dragonflies there also.
Hope to see you there!
Al Warfield
