Sunday proved to be a good day to see birds almost anywhere. An impromptu
trip to the GDSwamp with stops at Brandon and Flowerdew "on the way home"
gave a tally of approx. 83 species. The weather at the swamp in the morning
was lousy with chilly temps for May, a light mist and ferocious mosquitoes.
Bird song seemed somewhat quiet at times but we hit many pockets of
activity with surges of bird song as we explored Washington and Jericho
Ditches. Highlights of the day:
Bald Eagle
Red-shouldered Hawk
Greater Yellow Legs
Lesser Lellow Yegs
Spotted Sandpiper
Wild Turkey
Barred Owl
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Red-headed Woodpecker
Eastern Wood Pewee
Acadian Flycatcher
Great Crested Flycatcher
Eastern Kingbird
White-eyed Vireo ;-)
Red-eyed Vireo
Yellow-throated Vireo
Blue-grey Gnatcatcher
Wood Thrush
Northern Parula
Yellow-throated
Common Yellow throat
Yellow-rumped
Black-throated Blue
Prairie
Black and white
Prothonotary
Water thrush (sp)
Ovenbird
Hooded
Blue-winged
Yellow-breasted Chat
Summer Tanager
Indigo Bunting
Horned Lark
Savannah Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Blue Grosbeak
Lots of butterflies at the swamp as the sun broke through about 1 p.m. Most
notably Palamedes Swallowtail. In a freshly plowed field across from the
entrance to Washington ditch over 100 Eastern Kingbirds were seen as well as
12-15 Blue Grosbeaks.
