The banding operation can add an additional five species to the
seen/heard at Henricus/Dutch Gap list for Saturday provided in the
earlier post. They are:

Northern waterthrush
orchard oriole
yellow-billed Cuckoo
pileated woodpecker
red-tailed hawk

That appears to bring the Great Blue Heron Days list for Saturday to 78
species, including 17 species of warblers.

The banding operation processed 30 birds: 24 newly banded and 6
recaptures.

The newly banded birds:

indigo buntings 9 (8 males and 1 female)
common yellowthroats 4
Northern cardinals 3
white-throated sparrows 3
Carolina chickadees 2
gray catbirds 2
prothonotary warbler 1 (her apparent mate was banded last week)

Recaptured birds (5 banded last fall at Dutch Gap):

2 Carolina wrens
1 Northern cardinal
1 white-eyed vireo
1 common yellowthroat

and 1 female brown-headed cowbird banded the previous week (no use to
look for a brood patch on her)

We had a steady stream of visitors who enjoyed up-close-and-personal
experiences with some beautiful birds.

The banding volunteers were

Mary Arginteanu
John Dillard
Larry Robinson
James Reilly

and myself, Bob Reilly
