VOLUNTEERS NEEDED !!!
FOR
Presquile National Wildlife Refuge?s
?Earth Day on the Island?
April 22, 2006
In 1953, Tobacco mogul Dr. A.D. Williams bequeathed his island farm to the US
Government. Ever since, Presquile National Wildlife Refuge has been managed as
a sanctuary for birds and other native species. On April 22nd, the public is
invited to spend the day at Presquile observing wildlife, hiking, and learning
about nature. Throughout the day, staff from the US Fish and Wildlife Service
will shuttle people to and from the peaceful 1,329 acre island in the James
River. Naturalists will be on-hand to lead walks and interpret ecological
wonders. No registration is required for this free event. Families are
encouraged to participate. Boat departure times will be from 9AM until 2PM.
Meet at the end of Bermuda Hundred Road (Route 827) in Chester.
The public event is contingent upon good weather and normal James River water
levels.
This event will also require assistance from volunteers to help in the areas
listed below:
Naturalist/Interpreter (2)- lead guided nature walks along the Refuge?s trails.
Mascot- wear a blue goose costume and greets (non-verbally) kids and families
Assistant to the Mascot- lead mascot as he walks around the grounds
First Mate (2)- assist visitors with boarding and departing shuttle boat
