Posted for a friend who lives in Beaverdam, VA.
"This morning's late breaking news:
We have 4 baby bluebirds in the nest box!
Don and I were on the deck, waking up with our usual coffee. Seeing the parent
bluebirds perched on top of the pole and looking into an empty mealworm feeder,
Don put a handful of *breakfast* in it for Mama & Papa. Next thing we saw was,
rather than stuff their own faces as they've been doing, they would each take a
worm, "chew" it up a little, then disappear into the box. After watching this
ritual for several minutes, we decided the eggs must have hatched in the last
12 hours.
Don goes out to take a peek (when the "coast was clear," of course), and there
in the nest were the 4 babies, so tiny they looked like little blobs. He
couldn't even see their heads, and said they were about the size of a SINGLE
peanut in its shell (you know, those peanuts with only ONE nut inside).
Success!!... they ALL hatched!
I haven't seen 'em yet, but will check later on today.
First hatch of the season.... WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!
PEEP! PEEP! PEEP! PEEP!" Not a bit excited, is she?
