[va-richmond-general] Vulcan Materials Saturday 9 April 2005

Over 20 birders hit the rock pile this morning under crystal clear blue skies
to tour, bird and learn about the Wildlife Habitat that Vulcan Material
employees have created at their site in Henrico County. A variety of mixed
habitat, numerous nesting boxes, a woodland trail, turtle platforms, feeding
stations and overall enthusiasm should give Vulcan Materials a lot to be proud
of in co-existing successfully with wildlife. We were treated to a slide show,
coffee and donuts and a terrific guide.
An American Kestrel hovered over one of the pit areas and was harassed by a
Red-tailed hawk which was then dive-bombed by 2 crows. Some of us who left
late heard a Blue-grey gnatcatcher in a cedar tree. Pine warblers trilled
throughout the woodlands. Our group was able to add 7 species to the current
bird inventory at Vulcan.
Highlights:
Red-tailed Hawk
Black Vulture
Turkey Vulture
American Kestrel
Brown Thrasher
Eastern Phoebe
Eastern Bluebird
Pine warbler
Yellow rumped warbler
Chipping sparrow
White-throated sparrow
...and the other usual rock quarry dwelling birds
Thanks go out to Sue Dudley who made for a fun and very different morning-I
don't think she left any stones unturned...
Thanks also to the great turnout from RAS-great to see all you guys.
