I birded the section from the 42nd St. Parking Lot to the Visitor Center (
which some are calling Reedy Creek) from 7:30-9:15. A lovely day, no wind, but
almost no migrants. The James River is still extremely high, roaring, and
almost up to the paths. highlights included a Gadzillion Yellow-rumps (you
know, in
breeding plumage they are pretty snazzy) followed by lots and lots of
Carolina Wrens, Cardinals, and Robins - everywhere. New for the year for me
were:
Chimney Swifts ( many), a Green Heron ( always nice to see in the Park), Brown
Thrasher - and best of all, an Eastern Kingbird in the dead tree by the bridge
at Reedy Creek and a singing Prothonotary Warbler right at the foot of the
Bridge-Spiral Staircase down from the Parking Lot.
