[va-richmond-general] James River Park 4/9 - 4/10/04

I joined Mary Argenteanu yesterday (Friday) morning at the Wetlands and
then spent an hour and a half between 42nd St and Reedy Creek this morning.
Highlights from the Wetlands included my first Common Yellowthroat of
the year and a pair of nesting Sharp-shinned Hawks. There were singing
Yellow-throated Warblers all over the place, and a pair of Palm Warblers
cavorting in the bushy tree just over from the eastern-most blind at the
pond.
The first two Chimney Swifts of the season were cruising over my house
when I arrived home from work. No hummingbirds yet.
Today was a great day at 42nd street, in spite of the gloomy weather. No
new warblers, just Yellow-rumped and Pine. (Didn't even hear a
Yellow-throated today.) I enjoyed some great face-to-face looks at a
couple of Great Horned Owls (one adult, one juvenile) in a tall tulip
poplar directly south of the storm drain outlet. The Bonaparte's Gulls
that Paul Bedell reported earlier in the week were still present on the
river. A pair of Great Egrets flew over, along with a couple of Chimney
Swifts. I found a Purple Finch and a couple of Northern Rough-winged
Swallows at Reedy Creek. Finally, I had a really nice look at a pair of
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers from *above* on the footbridge. I'm so used to
staring up at their bellies that this was a real treat.
