[va-richmond-general] Pileated Woodpecker

We had one yesterday in the back yard. I noticed loud drumming. We have a bat
house about 25 feet up in a tall tulip poplar. There have never been any bats
in it. The pileated was below the bat house drumming on the entrance, which is
too narrow for that bird. It was also chipping away the wood at the entrance.
It stayed there and drummed/chipped for about 20 minutes before deciding it was
useless. Last year a pair nested in a nearby tree, which was hollow and broke
off about 30 feet from the ground during the fall storms. The bird was probably
looking for another nest site.
