We had a male hummer (Ruby-throated) show up Sunday (4/13) for the first time
this year, and he was there again this morning. In our experience the males
arrive first, followed by the females a couple of weeks later. Caroline & John
Coe did report one female yesterday, so maybe they overlap a bit.
Henricus today: Saw the first Common Yellowthroat of the year (for me) while
walking along the road near the entrance to the park. It was in a tree on the
edge of the flyash pond. Also saw and heard at least 12 Yellow-throated
Warblers, several Pine Warblers (saw 1, heard 4-5), a few Yellow-rumps(3-4),
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (several dozen) , at least one Pileated, about 4
Red-bellied WP, and a Cooper's Hawk. I thought I heard a Prothonetary but not
positive. Eastern Bluebirds (6-8), Tree Swallows (2-3 dozen), Red-wing
Blackbirds (3 dozen), Osprey (2-3), DC Cormorants (25-30), RS Hawk (1), and a
few other common birds. Surprised a GB Heron feeding on the James (saw about
12). I was more surprised than he was, I think. The gate was open a 7:30 -
probably due to a maintenance crew working. Looked for Amer. Redstarts but did
not see any yet.
(The numbers are so I won't get any flak from Roger Clapp!)
It's nice to be retired! Most noticeable in springtime.
