I hope the Chickadee can be brought back to health.

Here is a message I sent this listserve back on 2004 November 25,
Thanksgiving day:

I found an injured northern or slate-colored junco in our back yard today. I
got the bird into a shoe box lined with sheets, and punctured with holes and
secured, up high away from our 3 cats. I don't think there will be much help
for it today on Thanksgiving, but we wonder what to do with it tomorrow
morning. Is there a wildlife center near us or something - we live between
Colonial Heights and Chester. Or is there something else we should do for
it?

It apparently can feed on bird seed on the ground but it has sticking-out
feathers that apparently prevent it from flying.

I also put messages on Grace's and Linda's voice mail boxes and tried to
contact Sue but encountered a busy signal.

I put the bird in a box but could not get a hold of anyone on Thanksgiving
day, not even ARK. So I figured I had to wait until Black Friday. Anne had
an evening shift and came home about 1 am. She told me the junco had died.

For this reason, I hope that you get the Chickadee to ARK as soon as
possible and that ARK can handle it as soon as possible, even if it is
Saturday. If I remember correctly, this may be the Wild Things day at
Rockwood Park. If so, that may be a good place to go.

Hi,

Thanks for rescuing the little Chickadee!

Please keep the bird warm, a heating pad works very well under the box.
Keep the bird warm, dark and still. Please do not try to put it into a
cage, that is unneccessarily stressful.

You can offer a small dish of seed and of water in the box with the bird
while you contact a wildlife rehabilitator who can take a bird. Please call
ARK at 804-598-8380 as SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please start calling immediately
and give them time to return the call and respond to you, and be prepared to
transport your little patient out to the rehabilitator's location.

Thanks in advance for taking care of the Chickadee, you have a heart of
gold!

Best,

IE Ries

Today is Saturday, March first, at 1:50 PM. I have a small feathered
problem. It is a Chickadee. I am a birding novice so I can only state that
it appears to be an adult with bright eyes and adult plumage. Yesterday I
noted this bird clinging to the peanut feeders mesh and trying valiantly to
eat a peanut while clutching to the mesh.

This morning, while replenishing feeding stations in my backyard, I was
surprised to find the Chickadee on the lawn. It must be very weak without
much nourishment. I'm assuming something has happened to its feet so that it
cannot perch to get food or to open the seed if it manages to get it.

I placed the bird in a clean cardboard box with numerous holes for
ventilation. I put crushed dryleaves and chickweed in the bottom. Then the
bird.

What do I do now? I don't have a suitable cage for the bird. If I let it go,
it cannot perch or feed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. S. Rosapepe >
