The following is from a friend whose lifelong hobby is reptiles:
Raccoons have been known to do this. This is a way to get a meal and avoid any
of the toxins secreted from the toads dorsum/back area. Toads are not usually
found in water (not sure about breeding or egg laying) but raccoons are known
to "wash" their food as well which would explain why the toads where found in
the pool.
