[va-richmond-general] Surry County trip

3 birders participated in the Saturday March 24th, 2007 trip to Sunken Meadows, 
Chippokes State Park, and the Jamestown -Scotland Ferry. Osprey were 
everywhere. There were about 100 Gadwall in the ponds at Sunken Meadows. 
Because we went to Sunken Meadows first, we did not get to Chippokes until 
10:00 A.M. Several regular tourist had already walked on the beach by that time 
and flushed the shorebirds from where College Creek flows into the James River 
about 50 feet from the trail which is called the College Creek Trail. Birders 
vacationing this week or this weekend who get to the park when the gates open 
might see some good shorebirds there. The last part of the creek before it 
reaches the river and the beach on the river at the spot where the waters join 
is a bunch of sandbars and mudflats.Low tide makes it even better. No 
Nuthatches were seen or heard. We were hoping to see some Brown Headed. 

Next year's  inland shorebird trip will be much closer to Richmond . It will be 
the pond at Malvern Hill Battlefield of Richmond National Battlefield park.  On 
Sunday there were 70 or so shorebirds on the mudflats of the partially drained 
pond. With binoculars , I was able to identify Spotted Sandpipers and 
Yellowlegs. 2 other species were present but I would have needed a scope to 
identify them. Next year's trip will be one of the last two Saturdays of March. 

I cannot guarantee that we will see shorebirds at Lewis Ginter Botanical 
Garden, but I have seen them in the past on the Spring field trips to that 
site. The next Richmond Audubon society trip to Lewis Ginter is  Saturday, 
March 31 . Those participating in the Ginter trip are welcome to join me 
afterward, on my way home , to examine the University of Richmond lake for 
shorebirds. The lake at the University sometimes attracts migrating shorebirds 
too.
