Jim, I do the same thing! When I run out and clap loudly, the hoards of
grackles fly away, but the little birds, even the red bellied woodpeckers,
stick close and come right back. I'm sure they know exactly what's going on!
In fact when several grackles threaten a red belly, I walk toward the door and
the grackles move off while the woodpecker stays put. He can bully one grackle
by himself (also the female can) but more than that requires help.
