I arrived early for today's volunteer cleanup day at James River
National Wildlife Refuge to do some birding in the swamp along Flowerdew
Hundred Road on the southern end of the refuge.
There was at least one Red-headed Woodpecker that provided excellent
looks on several occasions, along with Downy, Red-bellied, Flicker, and
Pileated. There was also a Kingfisher hanging about, a few Wood Duck and
Mallards, a number of Yellow-Rumped Warblers, a couple of Bluebirds and
a Swamp Sparrow, among others. Complete list below.
