Richmond birders-
I got a chance to spend some time at the Wetlands on Sunday night around
dusk. It was my first visit of the year. I found lots of Winter Wrens, and
a pair of American Wigeon in the pond, among other things, but the highlight
of the evening was the pair of Barred Owls who appeared about 6:00. They
perched on the same branch, and I had a great look as they cackled at each
other, ruffed up their feathers, danced around, and generally made quite a
scene. What a thrill! This is an excellent place (and time of year) to see
these owls. I imagine they will nest.
The Wetlands is located on the South shore of the James River, downstream
from Pony Pastures.
I also observed a few dozen Bufflehead, a cormorant, and an adult Bald
Eagle on the river closer to Huguenot Bridge.
Good birding!
