I had a really strange thing happen last week. I have had bird feeders in the
back yard for the past year, since we moved here, but never in the front. I put
up a feeder in the front yard the other day, so that I could watch birds while
I have my morning tea. After I put up the feeder I went in the house to get
some sunflower seeds. I glanced out of the window, and there were three House
Finches sitting on the feeder already! No feed, brand new feeder, brand new
place, how on earth did they know! Nobody will ever convince me birds are dumb.
I went out, filled up the feeder, and came in and looked out at House Finches,
a Tufted Titmouse, and a Carolina Wren. This within five minutes of putting up
the new feeder.

Subject: [va-richmond-general] Birds in the Yard
Our yard birds haven't been unusual so far this winter, but the number of
White-throated Sparrows has surpassed counts in past years. We counted over 50
birds in the yard this weekend and that was just the ones we could see! The
yard was alive with them, with a good measure of juncos, cardinals and Mourning
Doves in the mix. As if to balance the large number of White-throated Sparrows,
we've had very few goldfinches. It's always fun to watch! Caroline Coe
