[va-bird] Red-breasted Nuthatch on DC Count

I surveyed the area along Georgetown Pike today during the DC Christmas Bird
Count with Tom Ewert, Greg Hays, and Brad Beukema. Our best bird of the day
perhaps was a Red-breasted Nuthatch found in a small stand of Virginia Pines at
Langley High School. Tom Picked up a Brown Thrasher at Claude Moore Colonial
Farm. In the afternoon, Greg and I surveyed the Annandale area. It was pretty
uneventful, except for a Wood Duck drake at Lake Barcroft.
I then joined Paula Sullivan at dusk to look over a potential new crow roost
near the intersection of Beauregard and Seminary Road. Fortunately, Paula
arrived well before dark and picked up perhaps 2450 American Crows and 50 Fish
Crows. I tallied an additional 200 American Crows coming into the roost. The
birds seemed to spread out a bit after dusk and this roost seems less
concentrated than the former one at the intersection of Rt.395 and Rt. 7.
So far, owling has yielded nothing, but I intend to have one more go at it
after dinner.
