I visited Occoquan NWR this morning. While finding nothing outstanding, birds
were quite active. There were many ducks in the Potomac River. I saw tundra
swan (2), canada goose, mallard, black duck, bufflehead, ruddy duck (lots),
common goldeneye (3 females), lesser scaup (thousands), greater scaup (1, but
undoubtedly more), hooded merganser (many at mouth of Occoquan River), and
common merganser (4). Sparrows were active, with swamp (30+), song, savannah,
field, white-throated, tree (1), eastern towhee (1), and dark-eyed junco (1)
seen. Other notables were winter wren (2), hermit thrush (1), yellow-bellied
sapsucker (2), northern harrier (1), red-shouldered hawk (1), and bald eagle
(2).
