[va-bird] Yard Sparrows; Chicken Scratch Question

I had a Fox Sparrow in the yard this morning and a high count (for my yard)
of 8 White-throated Sparrows.

Yesterday I bought a bag of "chicken scratch" to throw on the ground for the
sparrows and Juncos. I don't know how good it will be for feeding the birds;
it is mostly cracked corn and wheat (I think). I have not read or heard much
about it for feeding the birds. It is very inexpensive, though: less than $8
for a 50 pound bag. And since chickens are in fact birds, maybe the wild
birds will like it too! One thing that did occur to me is that some of the
corn pieces are a bit large. But the squirrels and chipmunks seem to be
taking care of those. And I'm sure the evil House Sparrows will just thrive
on it. But, they will always be with us. I think it is worth a little
experimenting. Maybe lots of folks have been feeding this to birds all along
and I just never knew it? Please let me know what you think. Thanks.
