Gary and Matt Myers, Donn Ruffner, Russ Taylor and I surveyed the shoreline 
of Occoquan Bay NWR (Woodbridge) for the FAS waterfowl survey, Sat. Dec 4th.  
As the sun rose, we saw "clouds" of ducks flying on the horizon. Judging by the 
number of birds (approx 1500) we had to assume they were Scaup as they were 
too far away to positively ID. Hoping another team would get a bead on them, we 
started off at Marumsco Creek and worked our way around the shoreline. Best 
birds for our team were two Horned Grebes, just off Deephole Point.
After lunch, Kurt Gaskill joined us and we headed over to "Marumsco Acres 
Lake Recreation Area" which is a pond on the other side of the tracks opposite 
Veterans Park. We were rewarded with Hooded Mergansers and Gadwall mixed in w. 
the C. Gooses and Frankenducks...

After the lake, we walked in to the mouth of Farm Creek, near the 
Featherstone Industrial Center. While there was not much doing on the river,  
(RB Mergs) 
the woods and brushy edges provided us with some nice sparrows, Fox, Swamp, 
Song and WThroated, DE Juncos a Hermit Thrush, Bluebirds, a RS Hawk and AM Crow 
and Fish Crow.

Veterans Park was my last stop of the day - lots of C Goose (500) Mallards 
(100) and (2) more Hooded Mergs...Totals for area 16 follow - Rich Rieger
